Building strong institutions vital for democratic success: Ali Riaz

Building strong institutions is essential for a successful and sustainable democratic transition, National Consensus Commission Vice-President Ali Riaz said today.

"Only elections are not enough for a sustainable democratic transition," he said at a discussion titled "Future of Democratic Bangladesh: People's Perspectives and Expectations" organised by Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) at a city hotel today.

Ali Riaz said the commission is trying its best to ensure women's representation in the parliament.

At the event, BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed said the democratic practices will go back to the past if the culture of political culture is not changed, and it is not expected in any way.

"Therefore, we need to make our politics pro-people in line with the aspirations of the July uprising."

National Citizens Party Joint Secretary Tasnim Jara spoke for consensus among the political parties to strengthen women's participation in politics in a structured way.

BEI President M Humayun Kabir said they organised the event to discuss how the recommendations generated from surveys and consultations across the country can be incorporated in the ongoing reform process.

Political leaders from other political parties stressed removing the political divides and coming to a consensus to prevent the reemergence of fascism.

They also said the reforms being made should reflect the people's aspirations for an inclusive and accountable governance.
