Kerry Kennedy meets Ali Riaz, discusses national consensus efforts

Kerry Kennedy, President of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, on Wednesday met Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chair of the National Consensus Commission, and discussed the commission’s ongoing efforts to promote inclusive democratic dialogue in Bangladesh.
The meeting, held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, focused on the commission’s strategic plan to formulate a national charter aimed at creating a democratic roadmap for the country.
Riaz informed Kennedy that the initial round of consultations with political parties is nearing completion, and preparations are underway for broader national dialogues involving diverse stakeholders.

A democratic state is essential for upholding citizens’ rights, ensuring the rule of law, and establishing an independent judiciary that delivers justice at the grassroots level, said Riaz during the discussion.
Kennedy expressed strong support for the initiative, terming it a ‘timely and vital effort’ to build consensus among political and civic actors.
She welcomed the commission’s approach and extended her organisation’s best wishes for its success.

Catherine Cooper, Asia Staff Attorney of RFK Human Rights, and Angelita Baeyens, Vice-President for International Advocacy and Judicial Proceedings, were also present at the meeting.
