Upcoming referendum aims to stop future govts from becoming fascist: Ali Riaz

Professor Ali Riaz, special assistant to the chief adviser, has said the upcoming referendum is aimed at ensuring that future governments in Bangladesh cannot become fascist.

Speaking at a workshop in the capital today (8 January), Ali Riaz said the country's current constitutional and state structure gives those in power opportunities to become fascist.

Professor Riaz, who is also the chief coordinator of the government's referendum campaign, said "This path must be stopped by securing a 'yes' vote in the upcoming referendum."

He explained that the referendum will function like a general election, allowing people to decide the future direction of Bangladesh.

"Voters will receive two ballots at polling stations. One white ballot will be for electing people's representatives, and a coloured ballot will be for the referendum," he said.

The workshop titled "Upcoming referendum and what NGOs should do", was held at the NGO Affairs Bureau's conference room in Dhaka.

Emphasising civic responsibility, Professor Riaz urged NGOs to mobilise public opinion and ensure maximum participation.

"Those who sacrificed their lives during the July Uprising to establish democracy, and those who continue to suffer oppression, have entrusted us with this responsibility through their sacrifice," he added.

The session, moderated by NGO Affairs Bureau Director General Md Daud Mia, was attended by special discussants Monir Haider, special assistant to the chief adviser (unity), and Dr Badiul Alam Majumder, secretary of Citizens for Good Governance (SHUJAN).

Around 450 representatives from local and international NGOs registered in Bangladesh took part in the workshop.
