It is not possible to establish a democratic state bypassing the July Charter: Ali Riaz
Former Co-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission Dr. Ali Riaz has remarked that slow implementation of the July National Charter and the ruling party's reluctance are standing as obstacles to establishing a democratic state.

In a recent interview with the media, he said that citizens have voted in favor of state reform in the referendum. It is not possible to establish a democratic state by ignoring that verdict and bypassing the charter's commitments.

Ali Riaz said the July National Charter is not merely a document of consensus among political parties; it is a commitment to an accountable state, democracy, and protection of citizens' rights. Coordinated structural reforms are needed to ensure the independence of constitutional institutions, the independence of the judiciary, and the balance of power.

Noting it as regrettable that expected progress has not been made in implementation even one year after the charter was signed, he said the desired change is not possible through isolated amendments in various places of the constitution. The entire reform process must be considered in an integrated manner.

He further said that it is not acceptable to accept one part of the verdict given by the people in the referendum and ignore the other part. The moral responsibility of the political parties that signed the July National Charter is to implement their commitments and show respect for the people's aspirations.
